While it has been under reported by the major news outlets, sales figures and just a simple look at the up swelling in competitions shows us that there is tremendous popularity growth when it comes to airsoft guns. Of course, most of us for a long time have regarded these guns as the province of the young, a sort of primer for more advanced weaponry as they get older. While these guns still market most of their models to young adults, the reasons are not the same. There are also those into these guns as collector’s items, particularly since the manufacturers have begun making the guns as exact replicas of the more popular firearms in the world.
There are basically three type of airsoft guns, with each of them deriving their power from a different source. There are those which are powered by a spring, using the energy produced therein to launch the ammunition. One could even make a statement that these are not true “air” powered guns, as the spring has direct contact with the pellet. Then there are electric powered guns, which make up most of the popular market. These run on batteries and have an electric motor inside to work the mechanism. The third and rarest form (though not actually rare by any stretch of the imagination) is gas powered guns, which run off of propane and other environmentally friendly gases.
All three types of the airsoft guns have seen their popularity surge in the United States over the last few years. This cannot be attributed to any one factor, though the overseas manufacturing has helped to lower the costs considerably over time, perhaps making the hobby a bit more accessible. There have been great advances in both the materials used and the craftsmanship involved, as well, leading more and more people to get into the field with an interest in solely collecting these guns and displaying them at home as replicas of military artillery.
Of course, the internet probably plays into the popularity of airsoft guns as well. With online wholesalers and retailers flushing the market with abundant guns, it is difficult to claim you can’t get just about anything you want. There is also a large online community dedicated to these guns, the discussion of them, and organizing competitions either virtually or at specified locations. It was said once that if you give a man or boy something, tell him the rules, and offer a chance to get better, it’s hard to resist. Certainly the airsoft market falls into that category, and could be the best explanation for the boom.
